Grow Pittsburgh and Big Green (formerly The Kitchen Community) previously partnered to bring schools Learning Gardens, ADA accessible outdoor classrooms built to fit organically into any school yard. They are designed to be easily managed spaces which schools take ownership over and incorporate into the structure and culture of their school community. The Learning Garden transforms urban schoolyards into vibrant gathering places bursting with life.

We recognize that each school and community is unique, which is why we design each Learning Garden specifically for each school. Additionally, we pair the school with a talented Grow Pittsburgh Garden Educator for two years. Their job is to support teachers’ use of the Learning Garden as a teaching tool, and to help schools build the groundwork for a thriving garden in the years to come.
