Last year, the City of Pittsburgh launched its first Food Justice Fund, investing $3 million to improve food access in underserved communities. Through this initiative, Grow Pittsburgh received $464,157 to help residents grow food, access fresh produce, and support healthier living amid rising costs. Nearly half of the award—over $204,000—was distributed to five local Black-led organizations, expanding urban farms, community gardens, produce stands, education programs, and a medically tailored food box program that delivered meaningful benefits across Pittsburgh.
With support from the Food Justice Fund, Freeman Family Farm and Greenhouse (Store) in Manchester provided residents throughout the Northside access to fresh, medically tailored food in 2025. The farm delivered over 350 food boxes, making sure families who struggle to get food on the table received support. Last year the farm reached over 200 households. This program built ongoing relationships and reliable ways for families to get healthy food, specifically tailored to their diets.
The monthly food giveaway program served as a cornerstone of Freeman Farm’s outreach efforts. Each month, the farm distributed fresh produce, pantry staples, and prepared meal kits, ensuring families had the resources to nourish themselves.
For many residents, Freeman Family Farm is more than just a place to pick up food. As one Northview Heights parent shared, “I always know if I need food for my kids or support for myself, Freeman Family Farm will be there. They don’t just drop things off—they check in on us.”
The farm also hosted monthly events for pregnant and postpartum mothers and for members of the trans community. These gatherings created welcoming spaces for nutrition, wellness education, and peer support.
At a recent postpartum wellness gathering, one mother reflected: “I feel seen here. No judgment, just support and real tools to take care of myself and my baby. I’ve learned how to cook meals that are healthy for both of us, and I’ve made friends I know I can call when I need help.”
Thanks to help from the Food Justice Fund, Freeman Family Farm has made it easier for people on the Northside to get healthy food and build trust, health, and empowerment in the community. The farm recently celebrated its 1st anniversary and will continue to provide resources to its community!
