In the summer of 2016, a raised vegetable
bed project was started by Tim and Lynette
Bloedow of Covenant Fellowship church
to teach people in the neighborhood how
to grow food. Grow Pittsburgh and Nine
Mile Run supported the project. In the fall
talk began of putting in an orchard on a
piece of land next to the church building,
and in 2017, twenty fruit trees donated by
The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation were
planted by volunteers from the community.
In 2018, the Pollinator Gardens and
Orchards were certified as Backyard
Habitats by Audubon Society of Western
Pennsylvania.
Community volunteers as well as out of
town visitors to the church have contributed to the maintenance and
enhancement of gardens. The location of this site on a major thoroughfare
and near a bus stop make the gardens easily visible to residents. An
educational event occurred in the spring of 2018 with many residents and
especially young children learning about the advantages of installing such
gardens.  On July 25, 2021 these gardens and orchard were a part of the Wilkinsburg Pollinator Garden Tour.  The orchard includes a variety of trees which provide beautiful
blossoms in the spring and some trees have produced fruit.
