DESCRIPTION:Join us for a quick & dirty on organic gardening geared towards folks who are managing or participating in community gardens. We’ll cover the most essential gardening basics: \n\nsoil health\npests and diseases\ngarden planning\ntips for watering\, weeding and mulching\n\nWe’ll bring it home to topics specific to community gardens: \n\nlow-maintenance growing strategies\ngardening in tight spaces\nmanaging communal crops\n\nThis workshop is an opportunity to hear from Grow Pittsburgh’s Community Projects team\, share your own experiences\, connect with other community gardeners\, and share community gardening methods that you’ve tried. You’re welcome to attend whether you’re dreaming about a future community garden or entering another year as a seasoned community gardener–or anywhere in between. \nCheck out the other workshops in our “How to Start a Community Garden” series! \nGrow Pittsburgh’s “How to Start a Community Garden” resources were originally created for new garden groups\, but are now meant for both new and experienced community gardeners. DESCRIPTION:Learn the skills and tools that you need to start your own seedlings at home this year. Topics will include choosing the proper soil\, crops\, trays\, pots\, and lighting along with a hands-on seed-planting activity. A list of resources will also be provided for purchasing the seeds and equipment that will be discussed. Each participant will be able to start their own 6 pack seedling and leave with the skills to get started right away.

Ticket price includes catering from Salem’s Market and Grill. \n\nYou can register solo or as a team (of up to 6 people)\nIf registering as a team\, list your team name and team mates names in the optional question after purchasing a ticket\nEach team member must have a ticket\nIf you’re not sure about a team yet don’t worry! You can register as a solo player and email us later to form a team\nIf you want to play but don’t have a team Drew can randomly assign you to a team!\nWe’ll have limited spots to register in-person at the event\, so try to register your entire team online!\n\nThis event is a fundraiser for Grow Pittsburgh. Tickets are on a sliding scale starting at $30. All proceeds will support Grow Pittsburgh and our mission to develop and support food-growing initiatives and programs across the region as a key way to improve the social\, economic\, environmental\, health\, and educational realities of people in our community.

DESCRIPTION:As we come out of Winter\, we remember it’s going to be Spring soon! It’s time to start planning your garden! \nIn this workshop\, our school garden team will share how to plan and map your garden. We will also be starting seeds together for you to take home. Garden mapping and seed starting indoors are great classroom activities to add to your curriculum and get students excited about your garden! \nThe workshop will take place inside the greenhouse due to potential chilly weather. SUMMARY:2024 Community Composter School Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Community Composter School is an opportunity for folks who work with an existing compost site (often at a community garden) to become advanced compost managers and skilled compost educators. Supplies are provided and consultation will be available to each participant as you make progress with your compost site. Attend this info session for more details and to start your application to be part of the 2024 cohort. \nThere are 6 modules in the program\, with 1-2 supplemental field trips. Some sessions will take place on Zoom but most will be in person\, outdoors\, with hands-on activities. CCS sessions will mostly take place every other Tuesday evening in April\, May\, and June. Modules include topics on soil and decomposition science\, compost basics and composting systems\, compost site design and management\, rebuilding urban soils\, and reaching and teaching others. Learn from soil and compost educators at Grow Pittsburgh and Pasa Sustainable Agriculture\, as well as local community composting leaders who’ll share their stories and skills.

DESCRIPTION:Mushrooms are quick and easy to grow inside any time of year\, providing fresh and delicious mushrooms in as little as a month. In this hands-on workshop we will go over the equipment and techniques needed for successfully setting up a simple growing chamber for cultivating mushrooms on straw or other common garden materials. Participants will go home with their own mini oyster grow kit.
