I’m writing to share the good news that Grow Pittsburgh’s new community greenhouse at Garden Dreams Urban Farm and Nursery will be open for business beginning Friday, April 15.

The new greenhouse (located at 806 Holland Avenue, Wilkinsburg, PA) allows Grow Pittsburgh to grow seedlings that will become fresh food for the community, as well as provide workforce development and educational programming.

Folks are welcome to visit Garden Dreams for plant shopping starting Friday, April 15. Our Seedling Sale will continue at the greenhouses until June 25 during the following times:

  • Fridays, 11:30 am – 6:00 pm

  • Saturdays, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Seedlings grown at Garden Dreams are also available at East End Food Co-op and at The Frick Pittsburgh.

The new Garden Dreams greenhouse is expected to yield more than 20,000 seedlings each year, providing an abundance of fresh local food for community members. According to a recent study by the City of Pittsburgh, in 2019, approximately 63,000 Pittsburgh residents were food insecure. In 2021, Grow Pittsburgh staff grew and distributed 28,340 pounds of fresh food to over 2,200 people in our region.

I’m very grateful to the many funders and individuals who contributed to make this new greenhouse possible and to Allegheny Land Trust for partnering with Grow Pittsburgh to preserve this site in perpetuity for urban agriculture.

After nearly two years of planning, site preparation, and construction, the 2,800 square foot greenhouse complex is ready to provide plants to urban farmers, schools, community gardeners, and home growers throughout the Pittsburgh region.

Grow Pittsburgh is proud to build upon the Garden Dreams legacy while increasing the capacity for gardeners and urban farmers throughout Allegheny County. In addition to the retail seedling business, Garden Dreams will be home to our youth job training program, an urban farmer workshare program, and an educational workshop series that will support the strong network of growers in our region.

Grow Pittsburgh will host an open house, seedling sales, and other public events throughout the spring to ensure that Garden Dreams customers, neighbors, and local gardeners can enjoy and help guide future programming on the site. To learn more, visit our 2022 Seedling Sale web page.
