Tomato School Part 2: Backyard Farm School
August 21 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us for (Backyard) Farm School, a monthly learning series at Churchview Farm. Farmers Tara (Churchview) and Hanna (Grow Pittsburgh) will be joined by local chefs and special guest farmers to lead this season-long workshop series.
July and August 2020: Tomato School – This in-depth workshop will be held in two parts. Churchview is famous for our 140 + varieties of heirloom tomatoes and we’re excited to share everything we know about our favorite (and most high maintenance) crop.
For Tomato School, we will be joined by Barb Kline – one of the co-founders of Grow Pittsburgh, owner of the former Mildreds’ Daughters Urban Farm, and all-around heirloom tomato expert. Barb has been a friend and “farmer mentor” to Tara since the inception of Churchview Farm, and is fully responsible for Tara’s obsession with heirloom tomatoes.
Part 1: July 17 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, will focus on cultivation methods. Tara, Hanna, and Barb will guide participants through the CVF tomato field and discuss everything from seed selection and transplanting, to trellising and pruning, to pest and disease management. We’ll also have some of our favorite go-to resources on hand to share.
Part 2: August 21, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, session will focus on the flavors and uses of our wide variety of heirloom tomatoes. Tara, Hanna, Barb, and a local chef friend will discuss harvesting methods, along with our favorite varieties and why. Participants will determine their own personal favorites after a tasting of CVF varieties, and we will share some fresh tomato preparations and simple preserving techniques.
