A Celebration of Seeds: Ninth Annual Seed and Plant Swap

Join Phipps Conservatory and Grow Pittsburgh for a week of free, educational programs about gardening!
For 8 years, Phipps Conservatory and Grow Pittsburgh have partnered with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to host an in-person seed swap. With COVID restrictions still in place, the celebration will be virtual this year. Tune into one of the great, free educational programs below to get your growing season started right!

Mon., March 22:
- Seed Saving with Michele Soto, Cutting Roots Farm and Apothecary | noon – 12:30 p.m.
Seed saving is allows you to keep and grow heirloom and open-pollinated seeds in order to increase the genetic diversity of plants available to gardeners. Come learn the basics and join the movement.
Tues., March 23:
- Backyard Composting with Dan Dalton, Pasa Sustainable Agriculture | noon – 12:30 p.m.
Composting is a great way to reduce waste going to landfills, build healthier soils, and grow healthier fruits and vegetables. No matter your situation, there is a composting solution that is right for everyone. Join us to learn about the principles around composting, choosing the right system for you, and making better compost this season!
Wed., March 24:
- Story Time with Phipps: Anywhere Farm by Phyllis Root and illustrated by G. Brian Karas | 10:30 – 11 a.m. or 1:30 – 2p.m.
Perfect for your youngsters, Phipps’ weekly story time includes a new book and activity each week. This week, Phipps staff will read Anywhere Farm, sing ‘Old Macdonald’, play Simon Says, and sing a goodbye song. Participants will also get emailed a follow-up seed starting activity using egg cartons.
Thurs., March 25:
- 10 Steps for Starting Seeds Indoors with Gabe Tilove, Phipps Conservatory | noon – 12:30 p.m.
Starting seeds indoors is a fun and affordable way to get more from your garden this year. Grow unique varieties, make use of seeds saved from previous seasons, and get an early jump on the season. This presentation will cover the essentials steps to successfully starting seeds indoors.
Fri., March 26:
- Season Extension with Dan Dalton, Pasa Sustainable Agriculture | noon – 12:30 p.m.
Don’t let early and late season temperatures keep you from growing throughout the year. With some simple season extension techniques you can grow for three or even four seasons! Join us to discuss how crop selection, crop planning, microclimate adjustments, and simple structures can keep you growing longer and better this season!
