With the warm weather and strong sun, our Allegheny Grows gardens sure are growing! Check out some updates below.

Amity Harvest Community Garden, Homestead
Students from Propel Homestead are hard at work, painting a garden-themed mural on the tool shed! Under the guidance of Cem from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, volunteers installed an orchard of pear and apple trees. Community members are also working on enhancing the herb bed with a variety of edible perennials including gooseberries, ostrich fern, bee balm, and anise hyssop. In the picture below, volunteers plant a row of basil and parsley plants on Planting Day, May 24th.

Coraopolis Community Garden
The folks at the Coraopolis garden hosted their fist planting day without Grow Pittsburgh’s help May 18th! They invited families who receive assistance from the food pantry to join the festivities. All food grown at the garden supplies food to the food pantry. Community members planted herbs, flowers, blueberry and hazelnut bushes and two plum trees in the front yard of the garden house, expanding on the plan from last year. Below, Herb points to heads of lettuce ready to pick for the local food pantry.

Mount Oliver Boro Community Garden
This garden has over 60 plots for local gardeners, most of whom are Nepali refugees from Bhutan. On Friday June 13th, gardeners, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and PA American Water planted cherry trees, figs and berries. PA American Water donated the funds for the fruit. This garden has become a place of cross-cultural learning and sharing: as people share excitement about growing food, and work together to build the garden, many connections are being made. Folks are learning new words and new vegetables! Below, community members harvest the first mustard greens at Mount Oliver!
