Why should I become an Annual Member?
Around the world, communities are finding urban agriculture as a local solution to global challenges like climate change, rising fuel prices, and hunger. As a member of Grow Pittsburgh, you will become part of an exciting and growing community of individuals working to promote and practice sustainable urban agriculture.
How could our different membership levels make a difference?
$25—Beneficial Bugs
$50—Nurturing Young Seedlings
$100—Beds for the City Garden
$250—Budding Gardeners
$500—Growing Community Gardens
$1,000—Cultivating Leaders
Our six levels of annual membership help to advance Grow Pittsburgh's work in a variety of ways. Here are examples of how your membership contribution could support our programs:
$25—Beneficial Bugs
We use organic and chemical-free techniques to grow our produce—protecting your health and the environment. So how can we protect our plants against pests without harmful chemicals? Beneficial insects, like ladybugs, have pests for lunch while defending our lunch. A $25 membership contribution could deliver a shipment of these positive predators to one of our gardens.
$50—Nurturing Young Seedlings
As baby seedlings experience their first vulnerable weeks in the soil, row cover can protect them from frost and insects. A membership contribution of $50 could provide enough of this blanket to protect seedlings as they mature in eight of our garden beds.
$100—Beds for the City Garden
Raised garden beds allow city gardens to sprout all sorts of possibilities. These space savers provide a structure to bring in new fertile soil and fit more plants than traditional gardens. They also form walking paths so neighbors and community volunteers can enjoy our gardens without trampling on their inhabitants. A membership contribution of $100 could provide the lumber and soil for one raised bed.
$250—Budding Gardeners
A membership contribution of $250 could equip the littlest of our gardeners with supplies, gloves, and kneeling pads at one of our Edible Schoolyards. By working with these 6-12 year olds in the garden and the classroom, we plant seeds of knowledge about where food comes from, the importance of healthy eating, and how to contribute to their school community.
$500—Growing Community Gardens
Grow Pittsburgh seeks to cultivate food security and community space in our neighborhoods through community gardens. A membership contribution of $500 could help us reach our goal of helping Pittsburghers grow their own food by purchasing the gardening tools for one new community garden.
$1,000—Cultivating Leaders
A membership contribution of $1,000 could help to provide healthy lunches, supplies, and field trip opportunities for our Summer Youth Internship Program. These high school interns are paid to grow more than food. They develop skills ranging from how to cook a healthy meal to how to manage a community project.
Can I give the Gift of Membership?
A Grow Pittsburgh annual membership is a Great Alternative Gift for someone who wants to support positive change on a local level.
Follow the two steps above to purchase a Gift of Membership Certificate for a loved one. Give us your email address when you sign up for our "Members Only" list (Step Two.) Within a week, we will send you a "Gift of Membership" certificate that you can print and personalize. These make a great addition to a birthday card or even a wedding gift.
