Urban Foodworks facilitates the growth of sustainable urban food systems.

Food is the single common element among all people, throughout all cultures, in all areas of the world. Connecting the food we eat with the place, the landscape, and the people that this food comes from is a practice rich with significance for us all.  Urban Foodworks strives to meet the critical need for this connection.  We recognize power of community gardens, urban farms, and urban green space to serve as a catalyst for neighborhood development, self–sufficiency, and ecological stewardship. Urban food production plays a crucial role in food security, social inclusion, and urban waste management. We believe that transforming delinquent urban property into green space for community gardens and small–scale farms is the most important step we can take today toward local food security for the future.

By transforming delinquent property into green space, we strive to strengthen the local food network and improve the urban ecosystem in a variety of ways:

  • Research community development, social interaction, and food security techniques
  • Educate consumers on the positive effects of buying locally
  • Demonstrate sustainability techniques such as composting kitchen waste and collecting rain water
  • Advocate for local food production by connecting farmers with consumers
  • Implement projects that bring together the urban farmers of Pittsburgh
