BRADDOCK FARMS

After over a year in the making, Braddock Farms is in it's first full growing season on a series of abandoned lots in the historic Borough of Braddock!

Located on a highly visible portion of the main business corridor, and set against the backdrop of the borough's last remaining steel mill, Braddock Farms is serving as Grow Pittsburgh's newest, large-scale demonstration farm.

Our farm operations manager has been working with local youth, many volunteers and  Americorps members to create the farm. The vegetable production will rely on raised bed construction, intensive planting techniques, and all-organic methods of growing. This year, improvements include a high tunnel green house that was constructed with the assistance of Penn State Cooperative Extension.  A now tool shed, constructed by the Youthbuild Training Program, stands on the corner of the site.  This summer Braddock Farms will grow a wide variety of vegetables and herbs, sell produce to local restaurants, and manage an on-site farmer's market.

"My dream is for Braddock to become the center of urban agriculture in the region."
--Mayor John Fetterman

Braddock Farms has received strong support from the Mayor's Office and Braddock Borough Council as a revitalization tool that will create job opportunities, transform vacant land into attractive greenspace, and increase local access to fresh nutritious foods. The farm will also serve as a living laboratory for developing an Urban Farming Certificate Program in collaboration with Penn State Cooperative Extension. The long-term goal of Braddock Farms is to create an urban farming infrastructure that includes spinoff farms and a farm cooperative.

Braddock Farms is our most ambitious project to date, and we look forward to its growth and development in the years to come. Check back for updates on our progress.
