Pennley Garden
Location: 298 Enright Place Pittsburgh, PA 15206
This garden started out as a lot of sunflowers, but has branched out to a community garden due to the demands of neighbors. Year 1 (2010) had 4 local girls growing their own peppers and lettuce, while keeping the two gardeners company. Year 2 (2011) had a burst of new interest, with vegetables growing in over 20 beds. We hope to keep growing and getting stronger over the years.
Pennley Garden currently has beds available! |

Our growing list of community gardens does more than just produce
food. We have created spaces where the community grows bu allowing
our residents to participate in learning and sharing the gardening
experience. The gardens become a source of inspiration, and
creativity. Our residents have places that fosters communication and
exploration.

Frazier Farms
Location: the corner of Frazier St. and Dawson St., Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Frazier Farms is a community garden in its second year, the first year it was worked on by over 40 community members in the South Oakland area. This year it is being worked on by The Green Team in the LEADS program. The first thing we did was learn about weeds and invasive plants from our Master Gardener Marge Lubawy, and then we went out and dug out all of the weeds. We planted all of our things in one day and divided it into three sections; flower garden, herb garden, and vegetable garden. In the flower garden we planted several flowers right in front of Frazier Farms to give the whole garden a nice look from across the street. In the herb and vegetable gardens we had to dig a little bit deeper to plant most of our plants. Last thing we did is prepare compost in the back of Frazier Farms which forms more soil and earth for the plants we grow. Come and see the hard work that the community and the LEADS program have done!!
The day of the tour, we will have food and a kids' activity at Frazier Farms. The community and the LEADS program participants will be on hand to show visitors know what the Green Team has accomplished. We can talk about the compost and the fence from G-Tech as well.

South Aiken Community Garden
Location: 135 S. Aiken, Pittsburgh, PA 15206
Three years ago we got our start with the help and support of Grow Pittsburgh. We have 6-8 families who use the space. The goal of the project is twofold: first, to teach families how to maintain their health and social environment in ways they have not yet explored, and, second, to give them a legitimate voice in the community through the space. We envision the garden to have functional art structures embedded with core educational concepts related to sustainable energy, nutrition (gardening, education about good eating practices) and physical activity (artifacts that generate energy while engaged in physical activity) that stimulate learning through doing (pumping water from well).
We are excited to show how easy it can be to garden in the city. The day of the tour, we will offer samples of food grown in the garden, and activities for kids.

Garfield Community Farm is a project run by The Open Door Presbyterian Church and other neighborhood churches. We seek to grow produce in the Garfield neighborhood in the style of a communally run farm with. The produce we grow is distributed during the Valley View Church's Food Bank and through our CSA vegetable subscription program. We grow a wide range of produce and many rare and heirloom varieties.
Tour day, visitors will be shown the various stages of soil remediation to build the rich topsoil at Garfield Community Farm. Plus, we will have dried and fresh herbs for a suggested donation.

Lawrenceville Organic Community Garden in Allegheny Cemetery
Location: Located inside the cemetery walls near the intersection of Butler St and Stanton Ave map
The Lawrenceville Organic Community Garden’s mission is to promote urban food production and community building. The garden provides a forum to connect with neighbors and share our cumulative knowledge on plants and food, as well as sharing in communally grown food, which breeds a sense of community within the neighborhood.
The garden measures 40 feet by 40 feet, and although it is mostly planted with vegetables, there are also sunflowers, daisies, and some other beneficial flowers. There are three raised beds down the center of the garden, but the rest of it is planted directly into the ground. We also have a beautiful shed —inside of which we store all of our tools, equipment, and a small library of donated books and magazines about gardening.
In keeping with our focus on engaging with youth (we have a partnership with Career Connections High School), during the tour, we will be offering activities for kids of all ages.

Shiloh Peace Farm

photo by Stephanie Rex from ThePatch.com |
Location: The corner of Homewood Ave & Thomas Blvd. 15208
The Shiloh Peace Farm first came into being during the 2008 growing season and is managed by Grow Pittsburgh in tandem with the Greenhouse and garden at the Frick Art & Historical Center right on the other side of Penn Avenue. The Shiloh Farm not only provides extra growing space for our Point Breeze production space but also plays an important role in the community by demonstrating sustainable urban farming on a highly visible and trafficked corner. During the summer months a weekly farm stand is held on the site where produce from Shiloh and the Frick Greenhouse and garden is sold.
Even though this is a production site, and not a "community farm", the earned revenue from selling the produce from Shiloh Farm to high-end restaurants goes towards the work we do helping folks in and around Pittsburgh to start their own community food projects.
Tour day come and get dirty! Shiloh Farm Manager Jane Olszewski will be planning a volunteer activity for visitors. |

Location: 1311 Arch street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Olde Allegheny Community Gardens were started in the early 1980's. We have over 40 plots and some gardeners have multiple plots. We garden organically. Individual plots are around 10 x 20 feet. The plots are maintained year to year by the same person/household. Cost is $30 per year. The garden is open to the public as a walkthru and benches are provided. Gardeners are expected to help in the communal areas i.e. outside the fences, pathways, sidewalks. We have water available through a loft building next door and a water pit installed by the city in 2010. In August of 2008 we were recognized by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society with the Community Greening Award. |
"The Garden" exhibit at the Children's Museum
Location: 10 Children's Way, Pittsburgh, Pa 15212
In 2010, the Children's Museum received grants from Nickelodeon, General Mills, and the Allegheny County Health Department to create a new, permanent outdoor Garden exhibit. The goals of the exhibit are to teach visitors how to grow and cook organic food, encourage a love of nature, and support parents in feeding their families "real", healthful, fresh food, with the hope of impacting the obesity crisis. The Garden features many recycled items, locally made rain barrels and a tumbling composter. Food from the exhibit is used in the Cafe as it is available, is cooked by youth in the Museum's various programs, or harvested for occasional weekend chef demonstrations at the Museum. Come explore the Gardens!
This exhibit is free to visitors, and perfect for young gardeners to enjoy! |

Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Memorial Garden
Location: 119 Davis Ave., Bellevue, PA 15202
Several years ago, a plot of land at 119 Davis Avenue in Bellevue was donated to North Hills Community Outreach. The donor, Terrie Amelio, requested that the property be used for an organic community garden and that the produce be given to families in need through NHCO's two food pantries. Volunteer Wade Cupcheck cleared the land for his Eagle Scout project; since that time, more than 100 volunteers have given hundreds of hours of their time and service to help this garden grow. Come and see how this exciting garden has taken shape!
On tour day, visitors to the garden will see an example of contoured raised beds. |

Location: 502 Jeanette St. Pittsburgh PA 15221
Hamnett Place Community Garden is in its first year of existence. Once the site of the Regency Apartment building, this lot has been repurposed into a place where neighborhood residents can grow their own food and grow as a community. With the help of an Allegheny Grows grant and the owner of the lot, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, a bare, muddy vacant lot has been transformed with the addition of raised beds, a shed, and a composting system. Plans for the future include more beds and a green space that will serve as a gathering place for the community's young people and adults alike. |

Whitney Avenue Urban Farm
Location: 711 Whitney Avenue, Wilkinsburg, PA 15221
Whitney Avenue Urban Farm is a volunteer-run farm located on the 700 block of Whitney avenue in Wilkinsburg, PA. Whitney avenue is a dead end street with 22 houses of which 10 are abandoned and boarded up. We are in the process of converting the 24 lots on the street into food producing farmland. The food that we grow is made available to residents of Whitney avenue and the surrounding neighborhood free of charge. We have 4 local children that play an integral role on the farm. We have set up a farm stand on our street known as the forgotten farm stand that the kids operate with the intention of teaching them social skills as well as math and gardening skills.
The children will be your tour guides and the Forgotten Farm Stand will be open for business. Stop by and check us out! We promise the boys on our street will impress you with their new-found knowledge and love of gardening. |

Penn Hills Community Garden
Location: Between transformer station and 1160 Jefferson Drive, Penn Hills, PA 15235
The Penn Hills Community Garden emerged in 2010 with 16 plots being built. The original garden members together with local businesses created a vegetable garden out of sheer hard work and innovation. Today the garden has had help expanding due to grant funding from Allegheny County and collaborative efforts from the Penn Hills Community Development Corporation. We have expanded to 48 plots this year adding an herb garden, perennial flower gardens, and plans for a berry garden and pizza garden to be created this fall. We are also working on a rain collection system in efforts to sustain our garden. Our gardeners come from various backgrounds, age groups, and ethnicities. Our hard work and dedication to this project has fostered an opportunity to once again meet our neighbors, promoting growth both inside and outside of our garden. This is what makes our Penn Hills Community Garden special.
Come join the Penn Hills Community Gardeners for a tour and cookout! |

Braddock Farms
Location: Braddock Ave and 10th St, Braddock, PA 15104
Braddock Farms just began its fourth full growing season on a series of abandoned lots in the borough of Braddock! The farm sits on the corner of Braddock and 10th Street, a highly visible portion of the main business corridor, and is set against the backdrop of the borough's last remaining steel mill. Braddock Farms is Grow Pittsburgh's largest production site and Braddock's single source of fresh produce.
Even though this is a production site, and not a "community farm", the earned revenue from selling the produce from Braddock Farms to high-end restaurants goes towards the work we do helping folks in and around Pittsburgh to start their own community food projects.
Come and get a tour of the farm!
